Episode 20: New Year’s Resolutions – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

New Year's Resolutions

In this episode of the Sweatpants Chronicles we’re talking about the good, the bad and the ugly of New Year’s resolutions! This is actually a topic that we have very different opinions on. Tristi loves making resolutions every year whereas Cassidy has actively chosen to never set them. In this episode we cover why our opinions differ so much and why that’s ok! We also give you lots of guidance to determine what kind of goal setting will work the best for you and how to set goals without shaming yourself.

Weekly Obsessions

Cassidy: This week I am obsessed with having my own space. I just got home from a two week long road trip and even though I LOVED getting to visit everyone, I am so grateful to be home. It’s so nice to sleep in my own bed, shower in my own bathroom, and eat the food I want to eat the way I want to eat it.

Tristi: This week I am obsessed with a new drink called Spark by Advocare. At the gym they call it “happy mommy juice” and I couldn’t agree more, haha! It’s even starting to take away my Coke cravings. It’s full of vitamins and minerals along with caffeine for an added energy boost.

Episode 19: Combating Body Stereotypes and Living Your Best Life with Mirna Valerio

Mirna Valerio

In this episode of the Sweatpants Chronicles we are so excited to be interviewing Mirna Valerio, aka The Mirnavator! We discovered Mirna a few months ago through an incredible documentary she did with REI. If you haven’t seen the video yet, be sure to click here to watch it on the REI website. As soon as we watched the documentary we knew we wanted to have Mirna on the show.

Mirna is an ultrarunner which means she frequently runs races of 30+ miles!  She also happens to be plus-sized and a woman of color. So she doesn’t quite fit the typical image you see in the media of a long-distance runner. But she doesn’t let that stop her! Mirna blows running stereotypes to pieces every time she steps up to the starting line. She is an incredible inspiration to both of us to pursue our dreams and passions despite what anyone else might think. She absolutely radiates joy and positivity and was so fun to talk to! We hope you enjoy the interview as much as we did.

Weekly Obsessions

Cassidy: We recorded this episode before Christmas and I was still obsessing over drinking my coffee while sitting in front of my Christmas tree. It’s just the best!

Tristi: I am obsessed with trying to maintain a positive body image. We had Emily Fonnesbeck on the show two weeks ago talking about dieting and body image, so I’m really trying to focus on staying positive and not looking in the mirror and picking myself apart but rather looking in the mirror and saying, you rock!

Mirna: I really love red wine! But not in an addictive way 😉 Right now I’m obsessed with cabernets. I had a house wine at a hotel in Seattle last week and it was really, really good. But I can’t find it anywhere because I can’t remember the name, haha!

Episode 18: How to Identify Your Core Values and Why it Matters

Core Values

In this episode of the Sweatpants Chronicles we’re talking about core values! It’s something we’ve already touched on in a couple of episodes but we wanted to spend a little more time exploring what a value really is, how to figure out what our own values are, and why it matters in our day to day lives.

During the episode Cassidy mentions a values exercise that she uses with her clients. We wanted to include that here for those of you that would like to try it out! You can also find another version that Cassidy really likes by clicking here.

Core Values

  1. Print the list below and circle all of the values that resonate with you. It is fine to add a few that you don’t see on this list. Don’t spend more than a few seconds reviewing each value – in other words do not overthink. If the value speaks to you circle it.
  2. Now limit the list to five values that define who you are now and/or who you want to become.
  3. Eliminate two of the five-circled values so that you have three values.
  4. Now eliminate one more leaving you with two values.
  5. Lastly, put these two values in order of importance.

Weekly Obsessions

Cassidy: This week I am in gift giving mode! We draw names in my family so I’m working on getting the perfect gift for a couple of family members. I love the process of picking out a great gift and making someone feel loved.

Tristi: This week I am obsessed with Cranberry Redbull! I may be going to the wrong direction in my quest to stop drinking so much soda. 😉

Episode 17: Intuitive Eating, Body Positivity, and Food Values with Emily Fonnesbeck, RD

In this episode of the Sweatpants Chronicles we are thrilled to have Emily Fonnesbeck, RD, CD, CLT, as our guest!  Emily is a registered dietitian who considers her philosophy to be a little bit different. She’s not so concerned about WHAT people eat, but WHY they’re eating and their relationship with food. She’s much more interested in the behaviors around food. She works primarily with disordered eating and eating disorders.

We’ve both followed Emily on social media for a few years now and could not have been more excited to get to interview her! Her nutrition philosophy lines right up with so many of the things we’ve talked about on the show over the past few months. We feel like this quote from Emily is such a good introduction to her thoughts on food and nutrition, “We have to value mental health just as much as we value physical health. If something you’re doing for your physical health is affecting your mental health, then it’s out of balance. We have to find something that’s supportive of both.” We could not agree more!!

You can read more from Emily on her blog by clicking here.
You can also find her on Instagram (@emilyfonnesbeck_rd) and Facebook (EmilyFonnesbeckRD).
You can find out more about her nutrition services by clicking here or by emailing her at emily@emilyfonnesbeck.com.
Click here to read Emily’s blog post entitled, The Association Between Social Media, Body Dissatisfaction and Disordered Eating .
Click here to check out the book that Emily recommends during the episode, Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program that Works on Amazon.

Weekly Obsessions

Cassidy: This week I get to take my kids on the Polar Express here in Heber and I am SO EXCITED! It is one of my favorite things every Christmas season. I get to wear Christmas pajamas, drink hot chocolate and see Santa Claus. If you’re a Utah local, they do still have some tickets available for the train rides after Christmas. You can click here to check those out.

Tristi: My obsession this week is getting my nose pierced! I’m going back and forth over the ideas. My kids absolutely HATE it – well at least my older boys do. My little ones think it would be so cool.

Emily: I’ve been working on decorating my office and getting things hung up on the walls. I’ve been shopping for frames and getting all the prints ready. I won’t even tell you how long I’ve been in this office with nothing on the walls. So it needs to happen and it’s exciting  to get it done.

Episode 16: Navigating the Confusing World of Adult Female Friendships

Adult Friendships

In this episode of the Sweatpants Chronicles we’re talking about friendships – how they work in your world, what they mean to you, and how they help you grow as a person! We both feel like navigating adult female friendships can be really difficult sometimes. But we’ve also found ways to make it a lot less confusing! So in this episode we share what has and hasn’t worked for us in our own friendships. We also talk about how to define what you value in your friendships and why it matters.

Weekly Obsessions

Cassidy: This week I am thinking a lot about how to be a good boss! I’ve brought two people into my therapy practice over the last month and am slowly learning to navigate this new normal. I’m learning that I have needs and they have needs and it can be difficult to make sure everyone’s needs are met while still setting appropriate boundaries.

Tristi: This week I am obsessed with a show on Hulu called Chance! It’s so good but it’s also pretty dark. I’ve binged my way through the first season and a half and now I patiently (or not so patiently) wait for the new episode to come out every Wednesday.

Episode 15: Defining and Aligning Holiday Values

holiday values

In this episode of the Sweatpants Chronicles we’re talking about holiday values! You’ll learn how to define what is MOST important to you during this season and how to align your actions with those values. We strongly believe that the more you align yourself with your own values, the more the people around you will love, appreciate and honor you because you’re no longer fighting against who you are.

Weekly Obsessions

Cassidy: This week my baby girl, Riley, turned 1! It’s really exciting and not, all at the same time. Haha! I’m sure I’m not the only parent to feel that way. 😉 She’s starting to get into everything! And she really hates crawling so she does this awesome boot scoot thing to get everywhere.

Tristi: I am obsessing over Christmas at my house! We’re in a new house this year and I’ve been so excited to decorate. Our tree is up and we’ve been listening to Christmas music non-stop.

Episode 14: Our Holiday Survival Guide

Holiday Survival

In this episode of the Sweatpants Chronicles we’re talking about how to survive the holidays with your sanity still intact! The holidays can be hard for so many different reasons. From financial hardship, to difficult family relationships (or even NO family relationships), to overly packed schedules and more. We’re doubting that anybody gets through this time of year without facing stress of some kind! So this week we’re sharing some of the tips and tricks we’ve picked up over the years for actually THRIVING this time of year. We promise it is possible!

Weekly Obsessions

Cassidy: This week I am obsessing over my new leggings from Maurices! I just want to wear  them everyday because they are so dang comfortable. I got them in-store but you can find them online by clicking here.

Tristi: I have been sick all week and haven’t been craving much other than Sprite. But a few days ago I got a serious craving for pumpkin pie. So I went to the grocery store and bought myself a whole pumpkin pie! I’ve only had one piece so far but it has been delicious.

Episode 13: How to Change Negative Core Beliefs

Core Beliefs

In this episode of the Sweatpants Chronicles we’re talking about core beliefs! We’ll talk about what they are, where they come from, and most importantly, how to change the negative ones.

A core belief is a belief that you hold so deeply that you sometimes don’t even know you have it. It is underneath everything you do and directs your whole life. Even a seemingly small core belief, can affect your life in a big way! Negative or incorrect core beliefs can hold you back from ever making meaningful changes in your life. But luckily, it is absolutely possible to change even long held core beliefs!

One quick note on certain types of core beliefs – sometimes our core beliefs develop because of a traumatic event. For instance, if you’ve been in a car accident you may develop the core belief that you are not safe driving in a car. Cassidy has found that it almost always takes professional help to change that type of core belief. Trauma is much bigger than ourselves and is very difficult to process without help. If you have been through a traumatic event please consider reaching out to a professional. You can learn more about therapy and why we think it’s so important in Episode 8 of the podcast – Only Crazy People Go To Therapy.

Weekly Obsessions

Cassidy: This week I’m obsessing over how to help some family members that are going through some tough things. I’m trying to strike the balance between supportive older sister, not living in the same place, and therapist. They really don’t need Cassidy, the therapist – they need Cassidy, the sister. And that’s a hard balance to find!

Tristi: This week I’m obsessed with the Netflix series Stranger Things! I told my husband to wait to watch the new season with me and he totally didn’t. So my son and I decided to watch it together, but then he went to a Halloween dance and I proceeded to watch the whole thing with out him. I just couldn’t wait! Haha! And I loved every minute of it.

Episode 12: How to Keep Mom Guilt from Turning Into Mom Shame

Mom Guilt

In this episode of the Sweatpants Chronicles we’re talking about something that every parent deals with – guilt! Guilt, and even shame, are totally normal emotions but we don’t have to let guilt turn into shame. In Episode 5 we talked about the difference between the two. Guilt is, I DID something bad, whereas shame is, I AM something bad. During this episode we talk about some of our own “mom guilt” moments and outline just what you can do do keep your mom guilt from turning into mom shame! Here are the three steps we discuss:

#1: Name it – Recognize the guilt for what it is.
#2: Apologize – If you decide that you made a mistake, take the time to make an honest apology to your child, your spouse etc. and most importantly yourself.
#3: Forgive – After you apologize, make the conscious decision to forgive yourself.

Weekly Obsessions

Cassidy: Since I have two little kids, I’ve had Halloween costumes on the brain the last couple of weeks! As I’ve planned what my kids costumes will be this year I’ve run across lots of articles surrounding the debate about Halloween costumes and cultural appropriation. One of the controversial costumes this year has been Moana. Specifically, whether or not having your white child dress as Moana is cultural appropriation. I’ve been trying to decide where I stand on this issue and I think I’ve finally come to a conclusion. For me, dressing up as an actual culture, is not appropriate. But if you dress up as person or an individual within that culture, then it is appropriate. I feel like I could talk about this issue forever, and have had lots of conversations about it with friends this week! It’s a tough issue and one that will probably keep evolving over time.

Tristi: This week I am obsessed with figuring out how to quit my soda habit! For a long time I’ve been a twice a day, 32 oz vanilla Coke, gal. It’s just my thing! But the past few weeks I’ve been up to three or four a day. Eek!  I tend to be an emotional eater, and lately I’ve been replacing snacks with soda. So now I’ve got to figure out what to drink instead of soda!

Episode 11: It’s Time for a Check-In!

check-in

In this episode of the Sweatpants Chronicles we’re doing a little check-in! We’ve covered a lot of big topics in the first 10 episodes of the show so we thought it would be a great time to follow up on a few of the things we’ve shared. We cover positive affirmations, mediation, crowns, women supporting women, and peaks and valleys. So a little bit of everything! We’ll link below to the episodes where we originally talked about each of those topics so that you can go back and listen if you haven’t had a chance yet.

Positive Affirmations – Episode 4: I Am Enough
Meditation – Episode 7: All About Mindfulness
Wear Your Crown – Episode 6: Keeping Up with the Jones’
Women Supporting Women – Episode 9: Grown-Up Mean Girls

We mention in this episode that we have an interview coming up in December with Mirna Valerio otherwise known as The Mirnavator! Tristi  mentioned Mirna as her obsession in Episode 8. Mirna is an ultra-runner that doesn’t have the body type of your typical long distance runner. She’s been called some really terrible things by people that don’t think she belongs in her sport. But she continues to do what she loves and call herself a runner – because that’s what she is! She recently did an ad with REI and shared her story. You can view the video by clicking here. Mirna is an incredible inspiration to both of us and we could not be more excited to have her on the show! Be sure to check out her story and let us know if you have any questions you’d like us to ask her during our interview.

One last thing we wanted to be sure to link to is a Facebook post we talk quite a bit about during this episode! You can read the whole post by clicking here. Tristi competed in a Crossfit competition called the Festivus Games a couple of weeks ago. She and her partner, McCall, took second place! Tristi shared that she was actually pretty bummed about not getting first place, but that her daughter, Afton, helped to bring the whole thing into perspective for her. Aren’t kids amazing? Sometimes they really do teach us a lot more than we teach them!

Weekly Obsessions

Cassidy & Tristi: We actually have the same obsession this week!  It’s one of our very favorite TV shows – This Is Us! We both love it because it depicts real life! Just all the shitty things that happen in normal life. It deals with grief, addiction, fat, shame, adoption, divorce and more. You can see how the traumas in the characters lives affect their belief systems and how they interact with the world. It might break our hearts from time to time but we just can’t get enough! All of Season 1 is streaming on Hulu as well as the first few episodes of Season 2. Be sure to check it out if you haven’t yet!
